GSP Group specializes in urban design, planning, and landscape architecture.This project was a series of three murals throughout their office in Downtown Kitchener.
For their boardroom, the history of the building is told through layers of images and typography. In the early 1900s, when Kitchener was still known as Berlin, it was home to the Berlin Interior Hardwood Company. I spent countless hours digging through the local archives, hoping to find some old advertisements or photos of the original signage, but came up empty handed. I did manage to find an illustration of the building from that time period, which I used for the background of this design. I then layered in a map of the city c.1912 and the Berlin crest from the same era. Since I had no examples of ads or signage, I created the typographic elements in a style similar to other businesses of that time.
